Dear friends and colleagues,
We hope this message finds you well. These are troubling times as we are all trying to cope with the threats resulting from the spread of the Covid-19 virus and with the restrictions on our professional and private lives. Unfortunately, these restrictions will not be withdrawn any time soon. Even if the current measures prove successful, we will see a significant number of new infections all over Europe and the world. The challenges are huge.
From today’s perspective it is difficult to imagine that we might be able to meet in June for our yearly conference, as if nothing happened. The board met (virtually) yesterday to evaluate the situation. We decided that we will monitor the further developments very closely and a final decision regarding the conference will be made by the end of April. An earlier cancellation would not result in lower costs and we don’t want to take a premature decision. On the other hand, we must be realistic and proceed on the assumption that we will not be able to meet in June. We will go ahead with holding the conference only if this decision will be fully in line with the recommendations of the public authorities. We will not take any risks – the health of us all and of the public is of paramount importance.
We therefore ask you to postpone making any travel arrangements unless the bookings are fully flexible. Should the conference be cancelled, C-IN, our conference organizer, will reimburse all members for the conference registration and hotel fees (if booked directly within the registration process).
Many of us will now be very busy with urgent work for clients who are seriously affected by the crisis. Many legal issues are of a cross-border nature. Please make sure to liaise with your EELA colleagues in other jurisdictions in order to provide your clients with the “international view” which is now needed.
We will of course keep you updated.
We wish you and your families all the best in these challenging times and hope that we will see each other soon!
Best regards from all EELA Board Members
